Concept explainers
A woman starts from her house and begins jogging down her street. In order to keep a record of her workout, she carries a stopwatch and records the time it takes her to reach specific landmarks such as intersections, school grounds, and churches. Since she knows the distance to each of these landmarks, she is able to tabulate the data shown here:
Time | Distance jogged |
10 min | 2.1 km |
17 min | 3.2km |
32 min | 6.5 km |
44 min | 8.6km |
Make a plot of the distance jogged versus time. Draw a test-fit me through the data, and use this line to estimate (a)the speed at which she was jogging in m/s and (b) the distance she will jog in 1 hour.

- A car starts moving at time t=0 and goes faster and faster. Its velocity is shown in the following table. t (seconds) 0 3 6 9 12 Velocity (ft/sec) 0 8 27 43 74 A. Estimate how far the car traveled during the first 12 seconds using the left-hand sums with 4 subdivisions. Answer: B. Now estimate how far the car traveled during the first 12 seconds using the right-hand sums with four subdivisions. Answer:arrow_forwardA straight running track is 2400 m long. A runner starts from the start line of the track, runs to the end line, and immediately turns back to run back to the starting point. After running for a total of 30 minutes, the runner was able to complete one whole round trip and is now halfway through the track on his second trip towards the end line. What was the runner's average speed in m/s? Answer:arrow_forwardA security guard walks at a steady pace, traveling 110 m in one trip around the perimeter of a building.
