Chapter 1, Problem 1.1P

The floor of a heavy storage warehouse building is made of 6-in.-thick stone concrete. If the floor is a slab having a length of 15 ft and width of 10 ft, determine the resultant force caused by the dead load and the live load.

To determine

Resultant force due to dead load and live load.

Answer to Problem 1.1P

Resultant force = 215 kN

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

Floor thickness =6 in = 0.15 m

Length of the floor =15 ft = 4.572 m

The width of the floor =10 ft = 3 m

A dead load of the floor is calculated by multiplying the unit weight of concrete with the dimensions of the slab and the Live load for heavy storage warehouse building is taken from the ASCE-7

Calculation:

Imposed load for a heavy storage warehouse =250 lb/ft2

Live load for heavy storage warehouse = 250×10×15=37500 lb

Minimum Design Dead load of stone concrete per inch =12 lb/ft2

Dead load on the warehouse floor of 6 inches thick =12×15×10×6=10800 lb

Total load = Dead load + Live load =10800+37500=48300 lb

Resultant force =48300 lb = 214.85 kN215 kN

Conclusion:

The resultant force thus obtained is 215 kN

A post consists of concrete with 15-20 mm diameter of steel rods. The post is 30 cm in diameter. The limiting stress of the steel is 140 MPa and that of concrete is 15 MPa. What maximum axial load that can be safely carried by the post if Es=200 Gpa and Ec-12 Gpa?
