During first prophase  of first meiotic division homologous chromosome pair up to form a bivalent and this is called synapsis. Crossing over then takes place between the two homologous chromosomes that is exchange of segments occur. In first metaphase the homologous chromosomes arrange themselves at the equatorial plate. Similarly in anaphase the centromere regions of the chromosomes do not separate. Each of the homologous chromosomes then completely move towards the opposite poles.
