You are working as a research intern in a synthetic polymers laband you synthesize a new type of polyethylene. You dissolve 1.44 g of your polyethylene sample in enough benzene to make 100. of solution, and the osmotic pressure is 1.86 torr at 298 K. You report the approximate molar mass of your polyethylene sample to be ____ g/ mol
Expert Solution
Step 1

NOTE : The units of volume of solution is missing. Looking at the data it seems it will be in mL only.

Hence I'm using the mL units for volume.

Given : Mass of solute i.e polyethylene = 1.44 g

Volume of solution = 100 mL = 0.100 L                                                            (since 1 L = 1000 mL)

Temperature = 298 K

And osmotic pressure = 1.86 torr = 1.86 / 760 = 2.44737 X 10-3 atm approx.                        (since 1 atm = 760 torr)
