A long horizontal wire AB rests on the surface of a table. See the figure below.
Another wire, CD, vertically above the first is 0.40 m long and free to slide up and down on the two vertical metal guides C and D. The two wires are connected through the sliding contacts and carry a current of 300.0 A, with current flowing from A to B. The mass per unit length of the wire CD is 5.00x10-3 kg/m. In addition, there is a magnetic field, B=2.5x10-4T directed into the plane of the paper. The current in all sections of the wire is 300A.
a) To what equilibrium height, h, will the wire CD rise? (Take g=l0 m/s2)
b) The current is quickly turned off and the wire CD falls a distance of 5cm in 0.1s. Find the magnitude of the induced current in the circuit. Take the resistance of the circuit to be 0.1 Ohms
c) Does the induced current flow, from A to B or from B to A? Explain your results.
