Question

Write the structures of the monomers used for getting the following polymers:
(i) Nylon-6
(ii) Melamine-formaldehyde polymer
(iii) Teflon

Expert Solution
Step 1

Polymers are the macro molecules which are made by the repetition of smaller units. These small compounds are known as monomers. Many molecules of monomers are joined to form polymers.

These polymers can be of two types: addition polymer and condensation polymer. Addition polymers can be made by the simple linking of monomers. Condensation polymers are the those type of polymers in which the monomer units link together by the loss of small molecules like water or methanol.

Step 2

(i) The given polymer is nylon-6. It is formed by polymerization of caprolactam. Draw the structure of caprolactam.
