Question
**Title: Assigning IUPAC Names to Organic Compounds**

**Instructions:**
Write an acceptable IUPAC name for the compound below. Include 'cis' and 'trans' as part of the name when stereochemistry is illustrated.

**Diagram Explanation:**
In the diagram, there is an eight-membered carbon ring (cyclooctane) with two bromine atoms (Br) attached to different carbon atoms on the ring. The orientation of the bromine atoms is shown with one having a solid wedge, indicating it is pointing outwards (towards the viewer), and the other bromine atom has a dashed wedge, indicating it is pointing inwards (away from the viewer).

**Considerations for Naming:**
- The prefix 'cis' should be used if both substituents (bromine atoms) are on the same side of the ring.
- The prefix 'trans' should be used if the substituents are on opposite sides of the ring.
- Number the cyclooctane ring in such a way that the substituents have the lowest possible numbers.

Expert Solution
Step 1: The important rules for writing IUPAC name of the organic compounds

1). Select the parent chain with the longest possible continuous carbon chain with a maximum number of substituents.

2). Assign the numbering to carbon atoms of the chain in such a way that the sum of the numbers of carbon atoms having substituents should be the least number

3). The different substituents should be written in   alphabetical order

4). If the same substituent is repeated more than one time then use the prefixes like di, tri, tetra etc.

5) The name of the complex substituent should be written in brackets.
