III. Religion Although many African today are Christians or Muslims, most people living in Africa still believe in the traditional religions. They continue to follow the old beliefs and rituals. Tribal religion is an inseparable part of tribal culture. Although religious practices vary from tribe to tribe, there are certain religious beliefs that almost all African religions have in common. Nearly all African religions believe in a Supreme Being or God who created the Earth and all humanity. God then left the affairs of the world to humans. Only in major crisis, such as a natural disaster or plague, do people seek God's help. Instead, most people pray regularly to "lesser gods" and ancestor spirits. These are the gods of rivers, caves, mountains, and trees. Africans do not worship nature but rather the spiritual forces that nature represents. Since Africans live close to nature and are greatly affected by floods, droughts, and famine, they worship these forces to keep the gods on their side. It is believed that ancestral spirits watch over the fortunes of their descendants. These spirits can punish the living if they are forgotten and not honored. Therefore, on all important occasions such as births deaths weddings, planting and harvesting, prayers and offerings are made to the departed ancestors.
