Microbe or microorganism is a microscopic organism. Microorganisms are divided into six main types, namely fungi, bacteria, archaea, viruses, algae, and protozoan. Plants are multicellular organisms in the kingdom Plantae. The parts of plants are stems, flowers, leaves, roots, seeds, and fruits.
Algae are group of phototrophic, oxygenic, eukaryotic microorganisms.
Importance of algae is given below:
Food source:
Several species of marine algae such as Laminaria, Sargassum, Porphyra are edible. Spirullinaare and Chlorella rich in proteins. Therefore, they are used as food supplements.
Medicine:
In treating worm infections, many red algae such as Corallina are used.
Commercial importance:
In the preparation of ice cream and jellies, agar is used. It is obtained from Gracilaria and Gelidium. Carrageenin is used as an emulsifier in paints, chocolates, and toothpastes. It is obtained from red algae.
