With the aid of sketches, explain Terzaghi's Spring Analogy Model.
A typical one-dimensional consolidation test sample is 2 cm in height and 5 cm
in diameter. Explain the possible reason why the diameter of the consolidation
test specimen is much larger than the height.

The one-dimensional consolidation test results of a 20 mm thick sample of clay
subjected to a surcharge of 300 kN/m are shown in Table Q3(c).
Plot a graph using root time method to determine the coefficient of
consolidation, Cv.

The sample was obtained from a 6 m thick layer of clay sandwiched in
between a layer of silty sand on top and dense sand at the bottom.
Assuming the maximum consolidation settlement is 40 mm under the
same surcharge load, estimate the time (days) required for 30 mm
consolidation settlement.
(ii)
Estimate the time (days) required to achieve 60% consolidation if this
clay layer is sandwiched in between the silty sand on top and a rock at
the bottom.
