A race is a group of people who share inherited physical characteristics such as skin colour, facial features, and stature.
One critical question about race is whether it is a biological or a social category.
Most people think of race in biological terms, and race has indeed served as the "premier source of human identity" for more than 300 years, or since white Europeans began colonising populations of colour in other parts of the world.
Although people differ in the many physical characteristics that led to the development of racial categories, anthropologists, sociologists, and many biologists question the value of these categories, and thus the biological concept of race.
For example, we frequently see more physical differences within the races than that between the races.
A person or group of people is frequently assigned to a race on arbitrary or even illogical grounds.
Race is more of a social category than a biological one with such arbitrary designations.
Another reason to question the biological concept of race stems from the field of biology itself, specifically genetics and human evolution research.
To begin with, people of different races share more than 99.9% of their DNA.
To put it another way, less than 0.1% of our DNA accounts for the physical differences between people that we associate with racial differences.
People of different racial backgrounds are much more similar than dissimilar in terms of DNA.
