Question

Why Silts and clays are considered fine-grained soil?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The particle of the soil which passes through the 75 microns or 0.075 mm size of the sieve is called fine-grained soil. The individual particles of fine-grained soil cannot be visible by the naked eye. It shows a poor load-bearing capacity. Its strength and volume change with change in moisture content.

The fine-grained soil is divided into two groups, slits, and clay. The soil particle whose diameter is between 75 microns to 2 microns is called silt. The soil particle whose diameter is smaller than 2 microns is called clay.
