Endocrine glands are ductless glands and release hormones directly into the bloodstream. Examples of endocrine glands include pituitary gland, adrenal gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland and pancreas.
The pituitary gland is located just below the hypothalamus. The pituitary gland comprises two lobes; anterior lobe (adenohypophysis) and posterior lobe (neurohypophysis). The hypothalamus is connected to the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland by means of a special portal blood system. The hypothalamus is connected to the posterior lobe of the pituitary by means of neurons.
The anterior pituitary gland produces and secretes the following hormones: Thyroid stimulating hormone (thyrotropin), Adrenocorticotropic hormone, Follicle stimulating hormone, Luteinizing hormones, Prolactin, and Human growth hormone (somatotropin).
