Question

Why is the offspring formed by asexual reproduction referred to as clone?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Two forms of reproduction are-

1. Asexual  reproduction- It involves single parent.

2. Sexual reproduction- It involves two parents . It involves fusion of gametes from each parent.

Asexual reproduction involves only single parent . There are various types of asexual reproduction such as -

1. binary fission- Parent cell double its DNA , before dividing. It is seen in bacteria.

2. Fragmentation- It involves formation of two or more fragments, which develops into individual. eg, starfish.

3. Budding- Small bud is formed on the surface of the parent. It is seen in yeast.

Step 2

Sexual reproduction involves fusion of gametes from two parents, so offspring are not identical to either parent. It produces genetic variation, as there are two different gametes are involved.

Genetic variation are produced when there is fusion of two different gametes, causing different combination of genes. Also, gametes are produced by meiosis, which causes genes recombination due to crossing over.
