         It is done to create something that can be unique or have to make something innovative. It is followed by a series of steps which can be undertaken to complete that project or to achieve a goal. 

Project is a series of action so there are a number of step that can be only followed in a certain order if you don't follow that order than the whole project will go in a wrong direction.
