Why is it important to determine the stress and deformation that occur in a shaft when it is subjected to torsional loads?

When torque is applied to the shaft, stress distribution takes place along the cross-sectional area of the shaft.
Stress is a material’s resistance to an applied force, and strain is the deformation that results from stress. Shear stress and shear strain (which are caused by torsional loads) occur when a force is applied parallel or tangent to an area.
The torsion, induced when torque is applied to a shaft causes a distribution of stress along the shaft’s cross-sectional area.
Shear stress is distributed along the radius of a shaft, minimum at the center, and maximum towards the surface.
