Question

Why is ethane a nonpolar covalent bond? I get that it is because they have "equal" shared valence electrons- but how do we know that? It seems they are on opposite sides of the periodic table, so I thought that they would have vastly different electronegativities.

Please give me a simplified answer. This is for a chemistry chapter in biology.

Expert Solution
Step 1

it is true that ethane is nonpolar , first polarity arises due to difference in electronegativities due to which dipole moment exist in molecule and cause polarity but in case of ethane the difference in electronegativities of carbon and hydrogen is negligible due to which there is no dipole moment and thus ethane is a nonpolar.
