Why is Auguste Comte considered the founder of sociology?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Sociology refers to the social science branch that studies society from a systematic and scientific angle. It is based mainly on three perspectives, namely- Structural functionalism, conflict, and symbolic interactionism. It explores society from a scientific viewpoint and is often referred to as the 'science of society. Social research involves steps like observation, methodology, data collection, data analysis, and so on.

Step 2

Auguste Comte was the founding father of sociology because he coined the term Sociology and founded the concept of social positivism. Positivism is a method of social science that adopts scientific methods of research. Social researchers study societies with the help of research steps that are similar to natural sciences.

He is also known for his Laws of Three Stages that divide society into three developmental stages: the theological, metaphysical, and scientific stages; and the Social Statics and Dynamics. Social statics refers to how social order is maintained, and social dynamics refer to how society keeps changing over time. According to Comte, a society should understand both the mechanisms of social statics and dynamics to survive.
