Why is alluvium often rounded, stratified, and sorted by size?
The depositional feature of material found by the riverside is known as alluvium. It develops in the lower parts of the river, which are the reason for flood plains and deltas.
The reason why alluvium often rounded and stratified -
The process is also called sorting when the flowing speed of water reduces, and the stream's capacity doesn't carry the rocks, then they start dropping the heaviest rocks in the beginning, then the smaller rocks will be carried far to deposit to other places.
The flood at any places deposit new sediments on the surfaces, and alluvial have a layered look. The color variation gives the result of sorted rounded gravel particles. This layer of uniqness is called stratification.
