Smooth-drum rollers comprises of steel drums in the front and back side, through which the compaction of earth-fill is achieved. The efficiency of such type of rollers is mainly due to the weights of the drums, which ranges between 8-10 tones. The weight and efficiency of the smooth-drum roller can be increased by addition of ballast, wet sand and water inside the drum or addition of steel sections to the roller frame. The smooth-drum rollers are most suitable for well-graded sand, gravel, crushed rock, asphalt, where the crushing action is required for compaction; and the pressure required for compaction is low. These rollers are also suitable for compacting or finishing of the upper surface of the soil mass.
