Question

Why does low self-control lead to people being more aggressive and impulsive?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Self-control is an inhibitory capacity of individuals to inhibit their emotions, feelings, impulses, behaviour and thought control to handle a situation in an efficient way. It is an executive function with cognitive processes which is necessary for regulating one's behaviour. There are different aspects to self-regulation like emotional self-regulation in which individuals are able to respond to a situation with a range of emotions that are socially accepted/ tolerable.

Self-control is essential to manage this range of cognitive processes which will reflect in our behaviour. Self-control could be emotional or behavioural, individuals should learn to regulate themselves according to the situation.

For example, if a person with good self-control is faced with an emotionally draining situation he chooses to act on his emotions and cognitive processes in an efficient way and regulates his emotions so he does not lose control over his behaviour.
