Every atoms wants to be stable. To gain stability, atoms need to achieve an stable electronic configuration, which is an octet. To have an octet, atoms react with other atoms of same or different kinds forming chemical bonds, and then become diatomic, or triatomic etc. A monoatomic molecule consists of just one atom, and a diatomic molecule consists of two atoms and so on.
