Why do people avoid purchasing genetically modified foods when grocery shopping?
Genetically modified foods:
Genetically modified foods are produced by genetically engineered organisms in order to have the desired property. Genetic engineering brings about the desired change in the genetic material of the organism and hence a desired trait in the organism and its byproducts. GMOs are commercially available since the 1990s and it helps the farmers to increase their crop yield, nutrients, protect their plants from weed, insecticides, pesticides, etc.
Example: Golden rice is genetically manipulated to produce a precursor of vitamin A. This is helpful for people with Vitamin A deficiency in the region where there is poverty and rice is the basic food source that is available.
