An extended family comes under the traditional family structure, where a family comprises more than one generation living in proximity to one another. 

The significance of extended families is diminishing, and this familial arrangement is found less and less. The class of the family also impacts the structure of the family. Individuals belonging to the middle class are more likely to live away from extended family because:

• The middle-class made a significant change in the structure of the traditional family. With the parents educated and working in a middle class, the rationality and thinking do not align well with the hierarchical form of extended family. Modernity increased the individuality among people, and extended familial structures prevent the expression of freedom and privacy.
