Calculate V , the number of valence electrons we actually have available
N3- = (3N atoms) +( 1 e- because of -ve charge)
=(3*5valence electrons on each N) + (1)
= 16 valence elctrons
So,total number of valence electrons = 16 valence electrons
Calculate P , the number of π electrons there must be in the molecule:
No. Of pi electrons= 6n +2 - V
n = number of atoms other than H= 3N in this case
v = Valence electrons=16 e-
putting values,
No. Of pi electrons= (6×3) +2-16 = 20-16= 4pi electrons
So there are either two double bonds or one triple bond.
