Otto Loewi and the proof of electrochemical transmission.
In early physiology there was a lot of discussion as to whether nervous transmission was electrical or
chemical or both. Otto Loewi conducted the definitive experiment that showed electrochemical
transmission using frog hearts and the vagus nerve. Loewi knew that vagus nerve stimulation lowered
heart rate as shown below. So, he isolated a frog heart with its attached nerve, and measured the heart
rate before and after stimulating the vagus nerve with an electrical impulse.

If Dr Loewi had continued measuring for longer after stimulation, which of the following would have
occurred?
O The heart rate would remain low
O The heart rate would gradually return to the pre-stimulation level
O The heart rate would fluctuate between high and low
O The contraction force would remain low as the heart rate rose
O None of the above
