Total number of electron pairs=12number of electrons of central atom+number of atoms linked to central atom by single bond

For negative ions, contribute the number of electrons equivalent to the values of negative charge on the ions to the central atom's valence electrons; for positive ions, remove the number of electrons equivalent to the values of positive charge on the ion from the central atom's valence electrons.
