In the 1960s, psychologist Diana Baumrind used naturalistic observation to understand different dimensions of parenting. She found out that different parents use different ways to raise their children. The ways were segregated into four categories by Maccoby and Martin. It has been found out that parenting styles have a lot of effect on the development and personality of the child.
Authoritative Style:
Just like authoritarian parents, authoritative parents also set rules and guidelines where the children are expected to follow these rules. But unlike authoritarian parenting, the authoritative style is more democratic. Authoritative parents are more open and listen to their children. They expect a lot from their children but at the same time also provide them with warmth and support. When children fail to meet their expectations, the parents are more forgiving than punishing. Baumrind mentioned that such parents are assertive but not restrictive or intrusive.
