Question: which of the following molecules will have the greatest difference in energy between its chair conformations? I understand that both B and D have chair conformations that are more favored one way than another (B because it's cis 1-3 where both substituents are equatorial or axial and D because for monosubstituents there are 1-3 diaxial interaction if the substituent is axial position) but why is B greater than D? Is it due to the fact it is two substituents over one? Can you explain this for me?
