There are many philosophies, theories and studies with regards to the relation between the church and the state. For long, in the medieval period, the church controlled state affairs. However, after a much struggle, the idea of secular state took prominence. Nonetheless, it had to go through several phases before reaching a point where a genuinely secular state where there was the separation of state and church affairs was established.
