Muscle contraction is the basis of all skeletal movements. Skeletal muscles are composed of muscle fibres which are inter made up of repetitive functional units called sarcomeres. Each sarcomeres consists of parallel overlapping thin ( actin ) and thick ( myosin ) filaments. The muscle contracts these this filaments slides past each other , thus resulting in the shortening of the sarcomere and thus the muscle . This is also known as the sliding filament theory .
Cross bridge cycling forms the molecular basis of this sliding movements. Muscle contractions are stimulatedstimulated when the muscle fibres are activated by the nerve impulses and the calcium ions are released.
