Question

Which of the following act as fermions and which as bosons: hydrogen atoms, deuterium atoms, neutrinos, muons, table-tennis balls?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Fermions are those particles which have spin half number of particles and Bosons are those particles which have integer spin particles.

In a nucleus, nucleons are there ( protons and neutrons) which are Baryons and they are spin half particles i.e. if there are odd number of nucleons inside the nucleus of an atom, then it will become a Fermion and if the nucleons inside the nucleus of an atom are even, then it will be a Boson.

H11=hydrogen atom mass number=1 (odd number of nucleon)Therefore it is a Fermion H12=Deuterium atom mass number=2 (even number of nucleons)Therefore it is a Boson
