Question

Which of the compounds will have higher solubility in acidic solution than in pure water?

Fe(OH)3

PbCl2

AgCl (s)

CaSO4

Expert Solution
Step 1: Solubility

The solubility of an ionic compound depends on the pH of the medium if it contains a strong conjugate acid, a strong conjugate base, or both.

Step 2: Iron(III) hydroxide

Fe(OH)3 dissociates partially in water to produce Fe3+ and OH- ions. In an acidic solution, OH- (strong conjugate base) reacts with H+ to produce H2O.

Fe(OH)3Fe3++3OH-H++OH-H2O

Hence, OH- is removed from the medium. So, more Fe(OH)3 will dissolve to produce OH- and to keep the solubility product the same.

Hence, Fe(OH)3 will have a higher solubility in acidic solution than in pure water.
