Assign priorities to the attached atoms/groups based on the atomic number of the attached atom.
If the first attached atom is the same proceed in the chain till the point of difference is obtained.
After assigning the priority, keep the least priority atom/group below the plane, If the priority order is clockwise the configuration is R and if it is anti-clockwise, the configuration is S.
If the least priority atom/group above the plane, if the priority order is clockwise the configuration is S and if it is anti-clockwise, the configuration is R.
cis- or trans- configuration can be assigned for those compounds which can have restricted rotation about double bond or ring
