Which do we use when forming an impression of someone who is important to us ? Is it initial perception ? Please explain I'm confused
Social cognition involves 2 important method, one is social perception and the other is person perception. Social perception, about other people are mainly based on the knowledge an individual or person gathers about other people and the attribution that is made about the causes of others' behavior. So, social perception is the knowledge and understanding about other individuals. Based on the perception, an individual decides how to respond to them and what kind of relation to have with the other individual. People use different techniques to modes to understand or obtain a deeper knowledge about the other person.
Impression formation is a method by which information about other people is transformed into an almost lasting or enduring thoughts regarding them. When we meet an individual for the first time, we first notice how they look, how he or she behaves, their facial expressions, body language, eye contact, what they say and how they say etc. After meeting with the person, the individual starts to categorize the information about that individual that are important. Based on these categories and their relation with each other, cognitive frameworks are established. On the basis of these cognitive frameworks an individual understands others. The features that explain the cognitive categories can be broad as well as narrow and also include other features like the physical features, personality trait or the occupational aspect etc. On the basis of this interrelation among the different categories helps in making predictions about other individuals whom we barely know or have restricted information about them. All categories formed in the mind may be interlinked to some categories and may not be related with other categories. For example, one might think if a person speaks a lot then he or she may be friendly, then whenever that person meets anyone who speaks a lot , he or she will be predisposed to believe that the other person is very friendly. For example, in a person's mind, speaking a lot may also be related to 'optimistic' but not to 'sense of humor'. This how how impression formation takes place, but it should be noted that all human beings, doesn't categorize an information they obtain by observing or interacting with others, in the same way. Each individual categorize an information differently.
