The presence of disproportionate opportunities and rewards for diverse social positions or statuses within a group or society is known as social disparity. Structured and repeated patterns of unequal allocations of commodities, resources, opportunities, incentives, and punishments characterize it.
There are two main reasons for social disparity:
- Inequality of conditions
The unequal distribution of labor, resources and material commodities is referred to as inequity of conditions.
For example, The homeless and others who live in housing projects, are at the bottom of the housing hierarchy, while those who live in multi-million dollar mansions are at the top.
- Inequality of opportunities
Opportunity inequality refers to the unequal distribution of life chances among individuals. This is expressed in factors such as educational attainment, health status, and care in the criminal justice system.
For example, According to research, college and university professors are more likely to disregard communications from women and people of color than white men, favoring white men's educational results by channeling a disproportionate amount of mentoring and educational support to them.
