Gene interaction is a process in which the effects of one gene are modified by one or several other genes. Sometimes the effect of gene interaction is that one gene masks (hides) the effect of another gene at a different locus (a locus is the specific physical location of a gene on a chromosome), this is called epistasis.

In epistasis the gene that masks the other gene is called an epistatic gene and the gene that gets masked is called a hypostatic gene. Epistatic genes may be dominant or recessive in their effects.
