Which are Normal Sleep Patterns?
A normal sleep pattern includes 4 sleep stages in the multiple sleep cycles.
Each cycle comprises 3 non rapid eye movement sleep and one stage of rapid eye movement sleep.
On an average, an adult undergoes each sleep stage for about 90 minutes. Two stages of the sleep alternate at about a 90 minutes interval.
Stage 1
The shift of the person from wakefulness to sleep consists of the first stage. This is marked as the light non REM sleep that slows down the heart rate , breathing , eye movements and brain waves. Muscles are also found to relax but may be found to be twitching occasionally. This stage lasts for about 5 minutes.
Stage 2
The drop in body temperature, muscles relaxing and halt in the eye movements marks this deeper non REM stage. It lasts for 25 minutes and accounts for about 50% of the sleep in adults.
