- Interferons are the bodies first line antiviral defence - are cytokines (signaling proteins that help control inflammation in your body) that are secreted by host cells in response to viral infection.
- Interferons of three types: alpha, beta and gamma (these are major types of interferons).
- Interferons-alpha - produce leukocytes infected with virus.
- Interferon-beta - is produced from fibroblasts infected with virus.
- Interferon-gamma - is induced by the stimulation of sensitized lymphocytes with antigens or non-sensitized lymphocytes with mitogens (cell devision).
