When radiation having a wavelength of 385 nm is directed at the surface of a certain metal, electrons are ejected with a maximum velocity of 2.61×105 meters per second. • Calculate the energy carried by one photon of the radiation. Ephoton = Answer J • Calculate the kinetic energy of the electrons (in joules per electron). Ekinetic = Answer J per electron • Calculate the work function energy for the material in kJ per mole of electrons ejected. Ework function = Answer kJ/mole of e–
Compton effect
The incoming photons' energy must be in the range of an X-ray frequency to generate the Compton effect. The electron does not lose enough energy that reduces the wavelength of scattered photons towards the visible spectrum. As a result, with visible lights, the Compton effect is missing.
Recoil Velocity
The amount of backward thrust or force experienced by a person when he/she shoots a gun in the forward direction is called recoil velocity. This phenomenon always follows the law of conservation of linear momentum.
