Suicide, refers to taking of one’s own life. It is now one of the 10 most leading causes of death in the world today. The most prominent personality traits associated with risk of suicide are aggression, impulsivity, negative affectivity, pessimism.
Specific negative untoward events like financial and interpersonal crises that might trigger an individual to take the drastic step. Certain negative events might also lead to a sense of helplessness and hopelessness in the individual, thus seeing suicide as the only option. There is a loss of sense of meaning in life.
Further research (Borges, et al, 2010) also indicates certain childhood experiences like family psychopathology and instability may result in child having low self esteem and poor problem solving skills thus aggravating the struggle and difficulties resulting in suicidal ideation.
Durkheim (1951) noted that the degree of sense of cohesiveness and sense of involvement with other people in one’s social and cultural circle might act as a deterrent in committing suicide due to personal stress.
