When deciding to install solar panels on your roof it is important to take into account the different alternatives that are possible. There are several options that you should consider; lease, buy, or keep the current system. There are benefits and demerits to all the alternatives. For leasing there is no maintenance or installation costs that need to be worried about and can save you money through things such as electrical heating. Unfortunately not everything can be positive. By leasing solar panels you relinquish the right to sell excess electricity, can not buy the existing panels on your roof, and lose the right to receive local rebates and incentives. When buying solar panels you will have to worry about initial cost, installation, and maintenance however you will keep your rights to the local rebates and incentives as well as being able to sell any excess energy that has been generated by your panels. Buying solar panels is not always the best option. The amount of solar energy that can be created is heavily dependent on location as can be seen in figure X. The amount of sun that a roof can potentially receive based on state alone isn't the only problem with location. different states have different incentives for solar and surrounding buildings can severely limit the amount of solar contact.
