Question

When a 2.45-g sample of solid sodium hydroxide dissolves in 41.2 g of water in a coffee-cup calorimeter the temperature rises from 20.00 oC to 34.77 oC. Calculate H in kJ/mol NaOH for the solution process.

NaOH(s)  Na+(aq) + OH-(aq)

The specific heat of water is 4.18 J/g-K.

Hsolution =______  kJ/mol NaOH.

Expert Solution
Step 1 introduction

In a coffee cup calorimeter

Amount of heat released due to reaction is equal to heat abosorbed by solution

qrxn = - qsolution

Now heat abosorbed by solution can be calculated by

qsol  = -  msol x Ssol  x  ∆Tsol

Where

msol = mass of solute + mass of solvent

         = 2.45 g + 41.2 g

         = 43.65 g

S = specific heat = 4.18 J/g K

∆T sol = ( 307.77 K  - 293 K)

           = 14.77 K

Where 0°C = 273 K
