Freud's theory of psychoanalysis focuses mainly on the unconscious processes. According to Freud, the basis of all human behavior is the unconscious mind, and a better understanding of the unconscious will lead to a better understanding of human behavior. Freud proposed that our mental being is divided into three parts: the conscious, refers to the ideas and thoughts one is aware of; the preconscious, consists of experiences which are unconscious but can become conscious with little effort; and the unconscious, operates on the deepest level of personality and consists of memories and thoughts one isn't aware of. Freud believed that personality of an individual arises from the conflict between biological forces, pleasure seeking drives and one's control over these drives. The personality of an individual develops as an result of the individual trying to find a balance between the two forces.
