It refers to any malicious software which can damage the computer system in which it is installed. It is designed to breach data privacy and security of the computer system, network or server. There are many different types of malwares such as virus, worms, trojan horse, spyware and so forth.
Virus: It can be used to modify / delete confidential data. In addition, it can be used to hijack other system for sending spam mails or illegal information.
Worms: It can spread like virus by replicating itself but it cannot modify/alter data. It is less harmful compared to virus. It can only consume resources like bandwidth but will not be able to disrupt the service like viruses.
Trojan horse: It is a program which disguises itself as a legitimate program which enables the attackers to carry out any operation in the computer/network that a legitimate user can do.
Spyware: It is used to collect personal details and sell it to interested parties which can be used for sending spam mails.
Adware: It is used to display advertisements when browsing websites.
