Question

What type of chemical bond is the weakest?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The type of chemical bond that is the weakest is to be identified.

Step 2

The chemical bond is the attraction between the atoms or ions that hold them together to form a chemical compound.

In general, there are three types of chemical bonds:

  1. Covalent bond- When atoms involved have similar electronegativity, they share their valence electrons to complete their valency and thus forms bond between them. This type of bond is known as covalent bond and is the strongest bond.
  2. Ionic bond- When atoms involved have difference in the eletronegativities, they transfer electrons forming the ions. Thus the forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions hold them together to form ionic bonds.
  3. Hydrogen bond- It is a weak bond formed between electronegative atom and hydrogen atom bonded to another electronegative atom (N, O, F).
