His theory states that the behavior can be regulated and modified by the outcomes it possesses, reinforcement and punishment can affect the intensity of our response or behavior. Such method of learning is referred to as operant conditioning.
Behavioral therapy refers to a broad range of methods used to deal with maladaptive behavior in a person. The therapy focuses on the particular behavioral aspects of the person and their environmental or social factors that has a direct influence on those behavior. This form of therapy uses techniques based on the theory of operant conditioning. The goal of the therapy is to introduce reinforcing techniques to encourage desirable form of behavior and eliminate undesirable form of behavior. The term "behavioral therapy" was first coined in the research paper in 1953 and the term was popularized by B.F Skinner.
The key concept or belief of behavioral therapy underlies in the principles of behaviorism, that all behaviors are learned and maladaptive behavior can be changed. It explains that people engage in an unhealthy behavior because their environment supports it, thus reinforcement by the society or their environment leading towards the development of a problem, if the reinforcement is eliminated it will result into new learning which will eliminate the maladaptive or undesirable behavior. Behavioral therapy are used to treat bipolar disorders, anxiety, phobias, depression, panic disorders, attention deficit hyperactive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorders.
