Expert Solution
Step 1 ans

Data communications refers to the transmission of this digital data between two or more computers and a computer network or data network is a telecommunications network that allows computers to exchange data. The physical connection between networked computing devices is established using either cable media or wireless media. The best-known computer network is the Internet.

This tutorial should teach you basics of Data Communication and Computer Network (DCN) and will also take you through various advance concepts related to Data Communication and Computer Network.

Why to Learn Data Communication & Computer Network?

Network Basic Understanding

A system of interconnected computers and computerized peripherals such as printers is called computer network. This interconnection among computers facilitates information sharing among them. Computers may connect to each other by either wired or wireless media.

Network Engineering

Networking engineering is a complicated task, which involves software, firmware, chip level engineering, hardware, and electric pulses. To ease network engineering, the whole networking concept is divided into multiple layers. Each layer is involved in some particular task and is independent of all other layers. But as a whole, almost all networking tasks depend on all of these layers. Layers share data between them and they depend on each other only to take input and send output.

Internet

A network of networks is called an internetwork, or simply the internet. It is the largest network in existence on this planet. The internet hugely connects all WANs and it can have connection to LANs and Home networks. Internet uses TCP/IP protocol suite and uses IP as its addressing protocol. Present day, Internet is widely implemented using IPv4. Because of shortage of address spaces, it is gradually migrating from IPv4 to IPv6.

Internet enables its users to share and access enormous amount of information worldwide. It uses WWW, FTP, email services, audio and video streaming etc. At huge level, internet works on Client-Server model.

Internet uses very high speed backbone of fiber optics. To inter-connect various continents, fibers are laid under sea known to us as submarine communication cable.

Applications of Communication & Computer Network

Computer systems and peripherals are connected to form a network. They provide numerous advantages:

  • Resource sharing such as printers and storage devices
  • Exchange of information by means of e-Mails and FTP
  • Information sharing by using Web or Internet
  • Interaction with other users using dynamic web pages
  • IP phones
  • Video conferences
  • Parallel computing
  • Instant messaging

What is Data Communication?

In computing, data is information that has been translated into a form that is more convenient to move or process. Whereas data is often distinguished from “control information,” “control bits,” and similar terms to identify the main content of a transmission unit.

So Data communication refers to the transmission of information between two or more concerned authorities using some specific medium and some specific pattern (0,1 &1’s) understandable to that medium and easy to propagate over it.

Data Communication System Insure

1. Delivery: The system must deliver data to the correct destination. Data must be received by the intended device or user.

2. Accuracy: The system must deliver data accurately. Data that have been altered in transmission and left uncorrected are unusable.

3. Timeliness: The system should transfer data within time. Data becomes useless if it is delivered late. In case of video, audio and voice data, timely delivery means that data is delivered as it is produced. This type of delivery is called real-time transmission.

What is Telecommunication?

Telecommunication is the transmission of signals over a distance for the purpose of communication. In modern times, this process almost always involves the use of electromagnetic waves by transmitters and receivers, but in earlier years it also involved the use of drums and visual signals such as smoke, fire, beacons, semaphore lines and other optical communications.

Telecommunication is a broad term that defines any assisted transmission. It could be telephone, telegraph, radio, TV, even smoke signals.

Telecommunication system consists of three elements:

  1. transmitter that takes information and converts it to a signal;
  2. transmission medium that carries the signal; and,
  3. Receiver that receives the signal and converts it back into usable information.
  4.  we also use datacom to communicate telecom. We use some equipment to connect from one subscriber to other. Suppose a call is generated from ANS it needs to reach its destination through transmission. Before transmitted it need to follow some steps. Data com is used for switching all calls from one site to another. To connect to another ANS there will be some procedure and to make a successful connection all of this is known as telecommunication.

Data Communication Vs Telecommunication

  • They are both a form of communication; data communication is a subset of Telecommunication
  • Telecommunication sends data between two links by means of electromagnetic. (Like satellite), while data communication means send data by telecommunication, it consists of codes of 0’s and 1’s. In computer means,
  • Data communication is digital data and telecommunication is equipped to send digital data to receiver.
  • Telecommunication is any communication over a distance. Data communication usually implies digital, and often excludes voice services.
