The stomach is one of the most distensible organs in our body. Stomach in its relaxed state could accomodate 0.8 to 1.5 liters of food. When much more amount of food enters into the stomach, the stoamch starts to strech. This strech activates the vagous nerve receptors that sense this strech and send the signal to the brain. The brain in retun quickly sends a signal to the smooth muscles in the stomach to relax so as to accomodate more food. If someone constantly feeds the stomach past 1.5 liters everyday, the stomach stretches and therefore there develops a greater food capacity. Also ,these signals from distension or stretch result the vagous nerves to signal the hypothalamus ( which regulates appipetite) as to when to stop eating.
