Question

What properties of CFCs make them ideal for various commercial
applications but also make them a long-term problem
in the stratosphere?

Expert Solution
Step 1

INTRODUCTION:

What actually the CFCs is??

The full form of CFCs is chlorofluorocarbon, which contain chlorine, fluorine and carbon. It is used as refrigeration also known as freon.

It is a safe alternative to ammonia which is developed in 1930s. Its usage got increase day by day in 20th century because of its convenience. It is also useful as coolants and propellents.

EXPLANATION:

CFCs are non-flammable,less expensive , less toxic ,highly stable and have a convenient boiling point and low critical pressure for liquification.

CFCs are ideal for the cycle of evaporation and concentration involved in refrigeration and air conditioning.

CFCs are stable, therefore they remain in atmosphere and gradually distributed around earth surface( stratosphere) and causes depletion of ozone layer.
